  • Sberbank has launched Russia’s first Bitcoin-secured bonds to appeal to qualified investors in OTC markets and aims to list on the Moscow Exchange.
  • The bonds provide an investment in the price fluctuations of Bitcoin as well as the strength of the US dollar against the ruble.
  • All transactions are settled in rubles without needing a crypto wallet or foreign platform access.

The largest banking institution in Russia, Sberbank, has issued the first Bitcoin -backed structured bonds in the country. These securities are sold to accredited investors and can already be traded over-the-counter (OTC). The bonds will be listed on the Moscow Exchange to be more accessible, transparent, and convenient for trading.

The linked bonds present a two-fold chance to investors. The returns are held to the U.S. dollar value of Bitcoin and to the fortunes of the U.S. dollar against the Russian currency, the ruble. This structure can enable investors to profit from the fluctuations of the cryptocurrency market and the foreign exchange.

In Russia, the regulated monetary environment allows entirely ruble transactions, and investors do not need to create crypto portfolios and operate on foreign exchanges. This method allows access to the digital assets by adhering to the changing regulatory regime in Russia.

Regulatory Shift Enables Crypto Investment Products

Russia’s regulatory stance on cryptocurrencies remains cautious but adaptive. Although cryptocurrencies remain illegal to use in performing simple payments, they can now be used to make cross-border transactions.

The Bank of Russia recently granted its financial institutions permission to issue crypto-related investment instruments to eligible parties, opening the door to such options as Sberbank proposing Bitcoin-based bonds.

Sberbank is planning to open Bitcoin futures on its SberInvestments platform as the Moscow Exchange enters crypto-themed financial products. The project is part of an increasing institutional interest in exposure to crypto adoption in the regulated markets.

Sberbank’s Broader Digital Asset Strategy Reflects Global Trends

Since it obtained a digital as set license in 2022, Sberbank has been selling tokenized assets consisting of gold and real estate. In 2023, it extended access to digital assets to individual investors, resulting in transactions exceeding billions of rubles. The bank also has an Ethereum blockchain network compatible with smart contracts and the creation of tokens.

The newest action of Sberbank is a replica of a similar trend by financial titans all around the world. Banks like JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Citigroup focus on stablecoin projects in the United States, aiming to allow cross-border payments. HSBC has introduced crypto settlement products in Hong Kong, and BlackRock has introduced tokenized funds on Ethereum and Solana to expand access to blockchain assets.
