According to BlockBeats, on July 28th, Citrini analyst Jukan cited a recent TrendForce industry survey, indicating that the top three MLCC manufacturers in South Korea and Japan saw their June shipments reach a five-year high: Murata with 140 billion units, Samsung Electro-Mechanics with 98 billion units, and Taiyo Yuden with 40 billion units. This growth was primarily driven by strong AI demand, a momentum that has continued into July. Cloud service providers' continued strong purchasing power for self-developed ASICs (such as Google TPU and AWS Trainium) is driving demand for high-capacitance, low-voltage, and small-size MLCCs. However, AI-grade capacity is draining supply from consumer applications: South Korean and Japanese manufacturers are rapidly shifting their consumer-grade X5R capacity to higher-specification X6S/X7R products for AI applications, putting pressure on the capacity of mid-to-high-capacitance consumer-grade MLCCs (1µF to 22µF), with key product inventories generally falling to 30 days or less.

Jukan points out that the supply shortage triggered a chain reaction, with distributors' emergency orders surging. The spillover effect of these orders benefited Taiwanese and mainland Chinese suppliers, leading to a significant increase in channel prices: distributors who stockpiled goods in advance raised prices by an average of 20% to 25%, and spot market prices rose to 2 to 3 times their original levels. The market exhibits a structural divergence of "weak end-user demand but firm channel prices": on the one hand, consumer electronics remain sluggish due to renewed inflation concerns caused by US-Iran geopolitical tensions and Apple's recent price increases for MacBooks and iPads; on the other hand, AI bottlenecks are spreading from GPUs and memory to the smallest components on the board, with capacity reallocation and channel scarcity becoming the main drivers of the current price strength.
