According to Alex Thorn, head of Galaxy Research, on the X platform, attacks targeting the Coldcard hardware wallet vulnerability have significantly decreased, but the cumulative losses continue to rise as more victims report them. This incident has had a huge impact on the Bitcoin community because the victims are primarily long-term BTC holders who adhere to the self-custodial cold storage philosophy, rather than those who lost assets due to participation in high-risk transactions or DeFi activities. With a total loss of $112 million, this incident ranks among the top 20 largest hacks in crypto history and is one of the most serious security incidents to date in the self-custodial hardware wallet field. Bitcoin culture may be entering a new phase as a result; the past reliance on ideological dissemination and extreme self-custodial propaganda is ending. The community needs to pay more attention to technical security, lower the barrier to entry for users, and avoid simply blaming ordinary users for security issues. This crisis may ultimately drive the Bitcoin ecosystem to establish a more mature security system. Galaxy Research has directly contacted 190 victims and highly confirms that the vulnerability has resulted in the theft of 1778.84 BTC (approximately $112.7 million) from over 8600 addresses. This statistic does not yet include some moderately credible suspected attacks, such as the unconfirmed "Wave 4." If these potential attacks were included, the loss could increase to 2417.35 BTC (approximately $153 million). Meanwhile, the incident is changing market perceptions of self-custody security. Galaxy stated that multisig wallets have emerged as "winners" in this incident, with no stolen transactions originating from them to date. Multisig service providers including Casa, Unchained, Nunchuk, and Anchorwatch have all observed a significant increase in user registrations and BTC inflows.
